About the NCS Reston Branch

The National Capital Section's Reston Branch hosts regular monthly technical meetings at ASCE Headquarters in Reston at lunch time. Formerly a Committee of the Section, it was, in late October 2017,  anointed a Branch in recognition of its successful track record of serving members from the Reston area with well-attended PDH and networking opportunities. Several Branch Officer positions have opened up for our member volunteers to fill. Take advantage of these emerging leadership opportunities!

Nov 4, 2019 (Reston): Concrete Corrosion and Evaluation

Dr. Brian Pailes will give a presentation regarding deterioration and rehabilitation of reinforced concrete infrastructure. Brian will provide a short overview of the corrosion process in reinforced concrete along with various technologies used in the assessment of deterioration mechanisms. The focus of the presentation will be regarding various projects that Vector Corrosion Services has been involved with, in the D.C. metro area. These projects include non-destructive testing and material sampling of the SW-SE Freeway, I-395 HOV, cathodic protection of the Arlington Memorial Bridge, and a D.C. parking structure.

About the Presenter: Brian Pailes, Ph.D., P.E., NACE CP-4 received his Ph.D. from Rutgers University, his M.S. at the University of Virginia, and his B.S. at Northeastern University. Dr. Pailes is a registered professional engineer and serves on a number of corrosion and non-destructive testing committees for TRB and ASNT. Currently he is the Principal Engineer for Vector Corrosion Services in Tampa, Florida. Dr. Pailes has worked on bridges throughout the United States and was a part of the Long Term Bridge Performance Program funded by FHWA. His area of expertise includes cathodic protection, non-destructive testing, concrete deterioration, reinforced concrete corrosion, and concrete materials.

We're always on the lookout for volunteers to help in the planning of technical meetings in Reston.
