May 14, 2019: EWB - Independence Village Water Supply Project

The Independence Village Water Supply Project is a project under the Community Engineering Corps (CEC) and the purpose of it is to complete a study of the existing Independence Village community water supply and distribution system, conduct an alternatives analysis, and provide engineering recommendations for the upgrade of the system. The community's water system is in need of upgrades due to the age of the infrastructure, and the community lacks the large amount of funds needed to complete the upgrades. The EWB NOVA chapter is providing engineering services to identify alternatives and assess the cost, constructability, and regulatory requirements for the alternatives.

About the Presenters: Sara Schmieg, P.E., is a Director of Business Development for Department of Energy (DOE) and nuclear programs at Tetra Tech in Reston, Virginia. Her background is in civil environmental engineering, specializing in environmental and water issues on DOE and commercial nuclear projects. She has been involved with Engineers Without Borders (EWB) projects for over a decade and leading Community Engineering Corps (CEC) projects with the EWB Northern Virginia chapter since inception in 2015. Christa Lash, P.E., is a civil design engineer at Wood Environment and Infrastructure, Inc. Her background is in civil and water resources engineering, specializing in stormwater management, river restoration, and dam decommissioning projects related to energy manufacturing facilities. She has been involved with Engineers Without Borders (EWB) Northern Virginia Chapter since early 2018 since the beginning of the Independence Village water supply project. Michael Sanio, ENV SP, CAE, F.ASCE, is the Director of Sustainability and International Alliances at the American Society of Civil Engineers where he is responsible for the societies sustainability program globally. Mike is an engineer with diverse experience at the local, national and international level focused on environment and sustainable development. He has a Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Carleton University Ottawa, Canada; a Masters Degree in Mechanical Engineering from University of Texas at Austin; and received an Honorary Doctorate from Ricardo Palma in Lima, Peru. He is also a member of the Pan American Academy of Engineers - API, became a Certified Association Executive on June 25, 2008, and served as Vice President and Secretary of the Reston Association Board of Directors.
