Sustainability Committee

The Sustainability Technical Committee focuses on sustainability issues in the National Capital Section. The American Society of Civil Engineer’s Code of Ethics states:

“Sustainable development is the challenge of meeting human needs for natural resources, industrial products, energy, food, transportation, shelter, and effective waste management while conserving and protecting environmental quality and the natural resource base essential for future development.”

The ASCE-NCS Sustainability Technical Committee focuses on sustainability issues in the National Capital Section.  

 The ASCE and it’s National Capital Section defines SUSTAINABILITY as a set of 

  • ENVIRONMENTAL
  • ECONOMIC, and
  • SOCIAL conditions...

 ...the "TRIPLE BOTTOM LINE" - in which all of society has the capacity and opportunity to maintain and improve its quality of life indefinitely, without degrading the quantity, quality or the availability of natural, economic, and social resources.   Recognition of the COST OF INACTION is critical to all of our decisions regarding our relationship with the natural and the built-environment.
