About the NCS Reston Branch

The National Capital Section's Reston Branch hosts regular monthly technical meetings at ASCE Headquarters in Reston at lunch time. Formerly a Committee of the Section, it was, in late October 2017,  anointed a Branch in recognition of its successful track record of serving members from the Reston area with well-attended PDH and networking opportunities. Several Branch Officer positions have opened up for our member volunteers to fill. Take advantage of these emerging leadership opportunities!

11/9/2017: Changing Reston’s Skyline - Structural Design for Reston Station OB1

Presented by Jennifer Kearney, Senior Engineer, Thornton Tomasetti

You are invited to join the Reston Branch at its next lunch meeting.

Reston Station OB1 is a new mixed-use building located in Reston, Virginia. Visible to thousands of people who travel to Dulles International Airport each day, this striking project consists of a 16-story office tower showcasing a unique lateral system with a diagonalized, exposed concrete exoskeleton. The tower’s floors are constructed of two-way, post-tensioned, 10-inch-thick concrete slabs with 6-inch drop panels. The exoskeleton columns are constructed of 10,000 psi strength concrete and slope at 11 degrees from vertical matching the building’s north and south edges. A five-story, open-air plaza on the north side of the building is supported by “tree columns,” which start at the base and splay out like a tree to support the overhang above the plaza. The building includes eight levels of below-grade parking laterally supported by the existing below-grade parking structure immediately adjacent to OB1. Thornton Tomasetti provided structural engineering for the project, working in collaboration with owner Comstock Partners, architect JAHN, and contractor DAVIS.
