The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) operates the 3rd-largest state-maintained highway system in the country, which encompasses facilities ranging from severely congested urban roads to low volume, rural, two-lane unpaved roads. A major emphasis area for the VDOT research program is to develop and implement innovative solutions to improve safety and mobility across the highway system. This presentation will provide an overview of a wide variety of recent projects in the safety and mobility areas, with a focus on projects of interest to residents of Northern Virginia. Topics to be covered include:
Projects relevant to Northern Virginia to be discussed include the Virginia Connected Corridor testbed in Fairfax, the regional impacts of the Metro Silver Line expansion, and effects of the I-66 Active Traffic Management system, among others.

About the Presenter: Michael D. Fontaine, P.E., Ph.D, is an Associate Director at the Virginia Transportation Research Council (VTRC), which serves as the research division of the Virginia Department of Transportation. At VTRC, Dr. Fontaine manages VDOT's research program in safety, traffic operations, intelligent transportation systems, and connected and automated vehicles. He is also a member of the graduate faculty in the University of Virginia Civil and Environmental Engineering Department, where he teaches graduate classes in transportation data analysis and highway safety. Prior to joining VTRC, Dr. Fontaine worked at Old Dominion University, the Texas A&M Transportation Institute, and the City of Charlottesville. He has his Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from the University of Virginia and is a registered PE in Virginia.
