ARE YOU INTERESTED IN IMPROVING YOUR LEADER SKILLS?
To help you do this, ASCE has joined with the Engineer Founder Societies (AIME, ASME, and AIChE)
to form the Emerging Leaders Alliance. Supported by a grant from the United Engineering Foundation,
you are invited to participate in the first Emerging Leaders Alliance training workshop. This will
take place on Thursday, October 9, 2008 through Saturday, October 11, 2008 at the Westin Convent
Center Hotel in Pittsburgh, PA. This is a great opportunity as workshop fees, 2 nights hotel stay
and meals during the program are covered by the Alliance. Only 12 ASCE members will be selected to attend.
If interested, please contact Jim O’Brien at jobrien@asce.org or phone 703-295-6055. For more information and
to view the program schedule and curriculum, please go to http://www.emergingleadersalliance.org/.
MENTORS NEEDED! - Ambassadors Invested in Mentorship Program
Are you a young professional looking for an opportunity to give back? The Ambassadors Invested in Mentorship Program is
actively seeking volunteers for it's mentoring program with the White Oak Middle School in Silver Spring, Maryland. Volunteers
will work with at-risk 6-8th grade students.
There are two opportunities to participate:
- Weekly: Wednesdays from 3-5pm beginning in February - The program's greatest need is for weekly mentors that
will work with students one-on-one. Each week there will be a theme, topic, and/or presentation and an associated
activity that the mentors will guide the students through. Training is provided. Please respond by Friday,
February 25th, 2008 if you are interested in this opportunity.
- One-time Career-Day Presentation: February 13, 2008, 3-4pm - Presenters will speak with
students about the engineering work they do, why it is important, and what they enjoy about it. Presenters
may also tie-in a hands-on design-build challenge to allow the kids to explore engineering concepts and
problem-solving. Not sure what activity to do? YMF can assist you in selecting and facilitating an
activity. Please respond by Friday, February 25th, 2008 if you are interested in this event.
Please forward this information on to your colleagues and friends. All volunteers are welcome and encouraged to
inquire. For more information or to sign up, contact Kirin Smith at (301) 585-0100 x3022
or ksmith@delonhampton.com.
There are a whole host of outreach opportunities currently available
- check out the Outreach page or contact
Kirin Smith to see
how you can get involved!
- If there are any local alumni out there, we still need YMF liaisons
with the student chapters at the University of the District of
Columbia and George Mason University.
- If you're good at explaining science and engineering to those
who are not that way inclined (or, at least, don't know it yet!),
the Citizen Scientist competition
is a good way for you to put your communication skills to work.
If there are any events that you would like to us to include on the website,
please send us an e-mail to ymf@asce-ncs.org
and let us know.
