Description

Ethics is typically taught using examples that demonstrate the perils of illegal behavior. Examining what something is not, does not define that something. Ethics is about cultivating exuberance in life while being aware of and leaping over peril.

Starting with two fundamental concepts in philosophy-metaphysics: the nature of existence, and epistemology: the method of knowledge, Ranjit Sahai, PE, F.ASCE explores answers to such questions as:

  • Why be moral?
  • What is ethics?
  • What should I do to live well?

To harness ethics is to consciously develop and apply a hierarchy of values in the context of what you want from life, and emotions play a vital role in helping you build that hierarchy. Learn about tools, such as that referenced in this presentation, to cultivate habits that infuse, while shedding those that drain energy. You will also learn about case studies from ASCE's "A Question of Ethics" article series to help you recognize situations that can imperil that journey.

About the Speaker: Ranjit Sahai, PE, F.ASCE, a Past President (2013-14) of ASCE-NCS, is a principal and founder of RAM Corporation, a professional services consulting firm serving State DOTs with a focus on traffic engineering design, stormwater facility inspections, and IT solutions for engineering workflows. He is also an author and speaker.
